Accreditation: Green Star Rating System
The South African Green star Rating System for Offices was launched in Cape Town in November 2008. It is based on the Australian Green Star Rating system, and has been further developed to suite South African conditions.
The system identifies key areas that impact the environment around it, and assigns a score to the reduction of the impact of these areas. These include:
- The natural environment
- Ecologically sustainable design
- Passive design strategies
- Orientation
- Building Form
- Wind/Ventilation
- Adaptable and Flexible Design
The scores are then factored together to achieve a rating. These range from 4 Stars for "Best Practice", 5 Stars for "South African Excellence" and 6 Stars for "World Leadership".
The current rating system is designed for new commercial office space, and further tools are currently under development for refurbishment, residential and retail rating tools.
The system is still further broken down into two sub-phases: Pre-Construction (Design) rating and As-Built Rating. Menlyn Maine will be aiming to achieve a Green Star Rating for all of its buildings, under both the design and as-built phases of the rating system.

Partners: Clinton Foundation
The William J. Clinton Foundation established the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) to create and advance solutions to the core issues driving climate change. It works with governments and businesses around the world to tailor local solutions that are economically viable and environmentally sustainable.
To advance this goal, the Climate Positive Development Program was created to meet the dual challenge of rapid urban growth and climate change by setting a new global benchmark for leadership in large-scale urban development.
Launched by the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the program supports the development of large-scale urban projects that will demonstrate that cities can grow in ways that are "climate positive," striving to reduce the amount of on-site CO2 emissions to below zero.
